About Amebis

The main focus of our work at Amebis is the development and production of software in the fields of language technologies and electronic publishing. Our primary objective is to create products for wide general use.

1. Language technologies

In the field of language technologies, we focus on the following:

1.1 Corpuses

We take part in the development, creation and management of text corpuses. Currently our largest corpus is the FIDAPLUS reference corpus of the Slovene language.

1.2 Language modules

We offer and develop various language modules for Slovenian as well as some other languages:

	Spell-checkers (Slovene, Serbian),
	Hyphenators (Slovene, Serbian),
	Lemmatiser (Slovene),
	Word form generator (Slovene),
	Grammar checker (Slovene).

Versions of these modules are available as plug-ins for various program packages (MS Office, Corel Office, Lotus Notes etc.). On request, we can provide plug-in modules for different user programs.

1.3 Translation system

The Presis translation system is designed to translate between natural languages. More on the translation system can be found at presis.amebis.si, where you can also test how it works.

1.4 Dialogue in natural language

We are developing a system of dialogue in the Slovenian language. The module is now in its last stages of development. It helps various applications to simplify communication with the user in natural language.

1.5 Speech synthesis

In cooperation with the Jožef Stefan Institute we developed a new version of the Govorec system, which synthesizes speech in Slovenian.

2. Electronic publishing

We take care of all phases of preparation before a reference work can be published in book or electronic form. This includes support to authors, creating user interfaces and databases, and making the end product. We specialize in dictionaries and encyclopedias.

2.1 Electronic reference works

We have used our knowledge and software to help give form to reference works of different publishing houses and authors. The final format of these works varies: they appear on CD-ROM, Internet/intranet, GSM (SMS), etc.

2.2 Preparing for book publication

Several years of experience, as well as our tools developed for that purpose, allow us to help with different phases of preparing various reference works. Our procedures include conversion between formats, scanning and correction of texts, detection and removal of structural errors, spell-checking, merging/unmerging data, sorting dictionary entries, creating indexes, preparing layout for printing, reversing dictionaries, and other automated and manual operations on data or texts.
